Fes to Erfoud

Yellow Route

Whether you start this journey from Fes or Erfoud, you will experience the true Moroccan countryside as you cross the Middle and High Atlas, Tizi-n-Talremt pass, Ziz Gorge & Oasis.

1. Fes

The evocative city of Fes, is the cultural capital of Morocco and is one of the most complete medieval Islamic cities in the world. Fez is rich with history.

2. Azrou

Azrou is a Berber village known for its handicraft co-operatives.

South of Azrou you will pass through the cedar forests and home of the Barbary macaque monkeys.

If you’re lucky to spot a troupe of Barbary Apes; you may even get up close. They are in fact not a true ape but a species of Macaque monkey.

3. Ifrane

Ifrane is nicknamed Morocco’s Switzerland.

It's a beautiful town with charming European style homes. In the winter months it’s not uncommon to get snow in this region.

The journey to Ifrane is picturesque.

4. Midelt

Midelt is a perfect point to break a journey for lunch.

Midelt is approached through a bleak plain of scrub and desert. The dramatic peaks of the High Atlas, rising behind the town, provide a spectacular background.

The wilderness you cross is incredibly diverse and can vary from rocky, sun-baked plains, to cedar-clad mountains and deep canyons providing spectacular views.

5. Ziz Gorge

From the Midelt you will cross Tizi-n-Talremt (Pass of the She-Camel), and descend into a desert plain along the Ziz valley. You will pass through stark, arid and stunningly beautiful country-side.

The Ziz Gorge really is a spectacular gash in the hills that surround the Ziz oases, the largest oases in Morocco. You’ll be blown away by the great date-palm Oasis that stretches over 50km.

This journey along the Ziz River also takes you past a series of fortified villages’ en route to Erfoud. The region is dotted with deserted kasbahs, palm trees and mud-brick villages – photographers will love this part of the country.

6. Erfoud

Erfoud is known as the "Gate of Sahara Desert" and is famous for the date festival.

Held every October this 3-day festival is not to be missed.

Try the most beautiful fresh dates in the world, if you are lucky enough to be travelling through this region during harvest.

Erfoud is also well-known for fossils. Visit a fossil shop and see how large slices of rock are cut exposing fossils of a bygone era from ammonite, crinoids, orthoceras, stromatolites and more.
